Running for a cure
Redpoint Client Services Director Laurie Nahigian is gearing up for her 19th Boston Marathon this month, taking her lifetime fundraising efforts past the $210,000 mark with an eye toward the quarter-million milestone. Her team, the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge (DFMC), raises more than $5 million in every edition of the Patriot’s Day classic.
“I’m running for my uncle Paul who lost his battle with cancer,” Laurie writes on her DFMC fundraising page, “for my patient partner Hunter who has been CANCER-FREE since 2008, and for those people and their families who are struggling through a cancer diagnosis. From Hopkinton to Boston, I will carry thoughts of those people every step of the way.”
Last year, at age 45, she posted an incredible 3:17:15, just 9 minutes shy of her personal best in 2009. (Remember that even some professional athletes have taken more than 5 hours to finish the hilly 26.2 mile course.) Her efforts in 2016 placed her 18th overall in her division.
The DFMC team directs 100% of funds raised to the Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research, which enables researchers at the leading edge of scientific study to achieve better cure rates and to enhance patients’ quality of life.
